The United Nations World Food Program (UNWFP) representatives led by Stephen Anderson, Country Director and Justin Sherman, Regional Advisor for East Asia Pacofic Office of the Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFPA) visited the Core Shelter Project at Sitio Olanen, Barangay Dacap Sur on September 1, 2010
According to Mayor Navarro, after 6 months of synergized work efforts, this newly -completed Core Shelter Project with 100 units is the result of the successful partnership of Dir. Leonardo C. Reynoso, the Local Government Unit of Bani and the United Nations World Food Programme.
At present, there are 100 families or 477 individuals (254 males and 223 females) occupying the 100 core shelter units in this new village the call "Burubor ni Ayat" (Spring of Love). During the visit, the UNWFP represntatives interviewd each household on the timeliness and worthiness of the assistance provided to them. According to the families, the UNWFP helped fast track the construction of the core shelter units because of the rice assistance. The rice assistance sustained the families while they are working in the project and not able to attend to their promary source of living (fishing and farming).
The counterpart of the UNWFP in the amount of PhP 28 million (worth of 14,000 sacks of rice) helped the typhoon victims and skilled laborers who worked for the construction of core shelter units, storm drain system, slope protection, riprapping and other construction works. For an 8-hour construction work a day, each family or worker is given 10 kilos of rice instead of cash payments.
